韓賽爾與格蕾特格林童話

　　Hard by a great forest dwelt a poor wood-cutter with his wife and his two children.在大森林邊上住著貧窮的伐木工一家，家里有兩個孩子。

　　The boy was called Hansel and the girl Gretel.男孩叫韓賽爾，女孩叫格蕾特。

　　He had little to bite and to break, and once when great dearth fell on the land, he could no longer procure even daily bread.伐木工一家本來就沒多少食物，所以當(dāng)大饑荒來臨時，伐木工再也買不起每天家人需要的面包了。

　　Now when he thought over this by night in his bed, and tossed about in his anxiety, he groaned and said to his wife, what is to become of us. How are we to feed our poor children, when we no longer have anything even for ourselves.一天晚上他躺在床上，想起這事十分焦慮，他沉重地對妻子說：“我們的下場會是怎樣？我們連自己都養(yǎng)不活，怎么養(yǎng)活這兩個可憐的孩子？”

　　"I'll tell you what, husband," answered the woman, "early tomorrow morning we will take the children out into the forest to where it is the thickest. There we will light a fire for them, and give each of them one more piece of bread, and then we will go to our work and leave them alone. They will not find the way home again, and we shall be rid of them."“我告訴你怎么辦，”妻子回答：“明天一早我們帶兩個孩子到森林深處去，在那兒點起一個火堆，給每個孩子一塊面包，然后我們就去工作，把孩子丟在那里。他們找不著回家的路，這樣一來我們就解脫了�！�

　　"No, wife," said the man, "I will not do that. How can I bear to leave my children alone in the forest. The wild animals would soon come and tear them to pieces."伐木工說：“不，我做不到。我怎能忍受我的孩子被遺棄在森林里？野獸很快就會把他們撕成碎片的�！�

　　"O' you fool," said she, "then we must all four die of hunger, you may as well plane the planks for our coffins," and she left him no peace until he consented. "But I feel very sorry for the poor children, all the same," said the man.妻子說：“我的天，你這白癡，那我們四個只好餓死了，你還不如現(xiàn)在就刨我們的棺材板呢�！逼拮硬灰啦粨�，丈夫只好答應(yīng)。他說：“不過我還是心疼我可憐的孩子�！�
